Hi Sobriety

How much money will I save if I stop drinking?

Money is often the first thing people notice when they stop drinking. The sums are simple: drinks per week × cost per drink × weeks. Here are some worked examples, calculated exactly as the Hi Sobriety app does it.

Your old habit1 week30 days100 days1 year
14 pints a week at £5.50£77.00£330.00£1,100£4,015
2 bottles of wine a week at £9£18.00£77.14£257.14£938.57
10 glasses of wine a week at £7£70.00£300.00£1,000£3,650
12 cans a week at £2£24.00£102.86£342.86£1,251
8 spirits and mixers a week at £6£48.00£205.71£685.71£2,503

What these figures leave out

The real total is usually higher. Drinking often comes with taxis home, takeaways, rounds for friends, late-night snacks and the occasional lost phone or bank card. Many people find their spending changes far more than the drinks alone suggest.

Make the money visible

Money you don’t spend on drink can quietly disappear into everyday spending. Many people move the amount they’ve saved into a separate savings pot each week, so they can see it grow, and spend it on something they really want.

Questions people ask

How much does the average drinker spend on alcohol?

It varies hugely. Fourteen pints a week at £5.50 a pint is £77 a week, or over £4,000 a year, before taxis, takeaways and rounds.

How do I work out my savings?

Multiply the number of drinks you have in a week by the cost of one drink, then multiply by the number of weeks. Hi Sobriety does this for you and counts it up live.
